Can you see the Sonics?
An Impossible Dream
My journey began 25 years ago with 16 mm film and Super-VHS analog video, cut and splice film and jog/shuttle linear video editing. Before my final year at Art College, DVCAM and Mini-DV digital video with Media 100 non-linear editing arrived. My dream of becoming a film director peaked with an interview for Direction at the National Film and Television School, before my slow-motion crashed into chronic anxiety/depression. I had to face up to the hard truth, I had the aptitude for filmmaking, but not the disposition.

Faced with the impossibility of reconciling the limitations of my mental health with the necessary rigors of filmmaking, I closed the door on film and turned my attention to music. I never imagined I would open that door again, but then I never imagined a world where you could conjure images and videos from ones and zeros. I never thought it possible that what was science fiction when I was a teenager, would become science fact.

AI generated images and videos have re-opened a door I thought closed to me forever. It has made what felt like an impossible dream for so long, feel possible. I have begun to take my first nervous steps, just as AI takes its first. We both have much to learn and much to improve, as we venture together outward, across an undiscovered country of limitless possibilities.
